FORMER SCHOOL TEACHER
ERVIC'E IN WANGANUI DISTRICT Wellington, This Day. The Minister of Defence. Mr F. Jones, announced to-day that information had been received that the first Victoria Cross of the war to be won by a member of the New Zealand Armed Forces and the seventh to go to an airman had been awarded to Sergeant James Allen Ward, of No. 75 New Zealand Bomber Squadron. Ware was born at Wanganui on 14th June, 1919. and is a son of Mr and Mrs P. H. Ward, 35 Konini street, Wanganui. Prior to his enlistment in the Royal New Zealand Air Force he was a school teacher at Castlecliff School, Wanganui. He was educated at Wanganui Technical College and Wellington Training College. He commenced fly ing training in New Zealand in July, 1940—P.A.
