NELSON RED CROSS
VOLUNTARY AID TRAINING STREET DAY TO RAISE FUNDS j A new and important departure in Red Cross work is about to take place which will bring Nelson district into line with the Red Cross Voluntary Aid organisation, placing it on a Dominion- : wide basis. In fulfilment of its obligations as | part of the International Red Cross. : which is firmly established among the ! peoples of sixtj’-eight nations, the Soi cicty has a definite responsibility both ! in peace and war time for the train- [ ing of personnel which will prove efI ficient and ready to come into action in | the event of local or national emergency. Already the personnel of i the Society has proved effective in rendering service in earthquake, floods and epidemic and since the war calls ; have been made upon the Society for Voluntary Aids to service in hospitals , and convalescent depots. The calls upon the nursing profession to-day are extremely heavy and it is most important that trained auxiliaries should be available It will be recalled that, at the close of the World War, a i serious influenza epidemic, exacting i heavy toll of life, visited many coun- ! tries, including New Zealand. The ■ need for preparation this time cannot • be too strongly emphasised. ;! With the progress of the war the . need will tend to broaden, the Red Cross authorities state, and it is im- ■ perative that young women should , | come forward for training and prepare . themselves for such calls as may arise. ’ The Nelson Red Cross Society is organising classes in First Aid, Home Nursing and Hygiene and Sanitation, 1 ! which will enable young women to re- ? ceive this training. The knowledge 1 . gained by the trainees will prove in- • valuable in their homes and to the comf munity in general. To raise funds for this work, the [ Nelson Red Cross, in conjunction with ,! the Order of St. John, will hold a street j! collection on Thursday.
