FINLAND AND BRITAIN
DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BROKEN OFF BRITISH MINISTER NOTIFIED (Roc. 12.45 p.m.) Rugby, July 28. Finland has decided to break off diplomatic relations with Britain. This decision was communicated by the Finnish Foreign Minister to Mr G. Vereker. British Minister to Helsinki after the Foreign Minister had handed Mr Vereker a message informing him that Finland was a co-belligerent with Germany, and that normal diplomaticrelations between Britain and Finland could hardly be maintained. In reply to Mr Vereker’s question whether this statement meant that Finland was requesting severance of diplomatic relations, the Foreign Minister replied that this was so. It is regretted in London that Finland has brought herself in a position in which possible German pressure will compel her to sever diplomatic relations with Britain, who in consideration of her friendship with Finland refrained from taking the same measures as she took in the case of Rumania. Bulgaria and Hungary when these countries allowed themselves to become collaborators with the Nazi aggressor. —BO.W.
