SERVICE IN AIR FORCE

WOMEN’S 32 NELSON APPLICANTS SITTING OF SELECTION COMMITTEE The Selection Committee for women and girls who have enlisted for service with the Women’s Aux- , iliary Air Force held a sitting in Nelson yesterday when 32 local applicants were interviewed. I The Selection Committee comprised j Wing Commander A. J. Manson (chair- | man), Mrs E. N. Carlyon. Supervisor of j the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Miss ,j L Turton. representing the Nelson Women’s War Service Auxiliary, and Flying Officer S. J. A. Turton. Adjutant at the Nelson Air Force Station. The majority of the women and girls interviewed will be appointed to the Nelson station, and will probably commence their duties in August. However five applicants, for various seasons, including their desire to live at their own homes, expressed the wish to be posted i to other aerodromes. No reservation is ■ made in regard to the type of work that i the applicants would be asked to do. . but naturally the authorities are anx- . ious to make full use of the qualifica- . tions of each applicant. Such duties as cooking and the serving of meals are ’ regarded as most important, but other r duties include service as shorthand | typists, clerks, waitresses, aircrafthands, telephone operators, dental and medical assistants, equipment assistants . and seamstresses. The services of the ’ women and girls will be used to replace [ every able-bodied man at present filling , a non-technical post, so that the men ' r can be released for more important war service. The number of applicants interviewed in Nelson yesterday was not sufficient to meet requirements, and the opportunity for the enlistment of many : more is still open. Any woman or girl » over 18 years of age can make applica- * tion for service in the Auxiliary by • communicating with Miss L. Turton, 1 Nile street East. Enrolment will be for ! the period of the war.
