GUARDED FRONTIER
BITTERNESS IN FRANCE \\ GRIM GERMAN INFLUENCE (' Noumea, Apl. 29. '! The following account of conditions M I in France is contained in a communique ! ] issued by Governor Sautot:— j ; ( The line of demarcation between the J i | occupied and non-occupied zones is j i | now rigorously guarded and resembles j' ; the frontier between two warring coun- ! j j tries. Cycle and cavalry patrols—in-!' eluding picked shots with telescopic!: j sights—barbed wire entanglements. ! rows of spikes and mined roads, are all!; 1 aimed to bar completely clandestine: 1 (communication. Nevertheless many/ (people recently have been killed trying!: jto cross and others have been ar- > ! rested. I A hate campaign is in full swing, |( setting one zone against the other. |; The German-controlled Paris press daily ' denounce the men of Vichy and rep-J resents the inhabitants of the non-!( occupied zone as living in selfish in- j dulgencc, neglecting the sufferings of j ■ the occupied zone. This unrelenting propaganda has not yet had a marked : effect, although passions are beginning : to be roused. All the Paris metro stations are plastered with hideous caricatures of Jews and freemasons, and the press of Paris daily repeats a hymn of hale , against England. It puts in the fore- j: front of its news the sentiments of American isolationists. The French people call (he Germans, 1 Fritzies, but only under their breath, for heavy fines are inflicted if they are overheard. Young Germans, at first correct in their behaviour, are chang- ' ing for the worse, and frequently accost women and girls in the street.
