i MEETING OF COUNCIL j I At the monthly meeting of the Mu I tueka Borough Council those present 1 were the Mayor (Mr S. E. Hulbert) and Crs S. B. Cana van. A. E. Fry. H. Whit- ! . well. T. Hickmott and W. Eginton. CORRESPONDENCE The Director. National Service De- , partment forwarded a copy of a circular which is being issued to Area Com- i manders in connection with a capitation ; ! grant for Home Guard unit expenses. : ilt was stated that the circular sets '; I out fully the method suggested for the administration of the grants. I The Waimea County Council wrote j; | enquiring if the Motueka Borough!, Council was prepared to issue drivers’ I licenses on behalf of the Waimea • i County Council for one week during j | May under the same ararngements a.; j last year. After the Town Clerk had placed the ! position before the council it was de- J cided on the motion of Crs Fry and j Canavan that the Waimea County ; Council be informed that the borough : council was prepared to issue drivers’ licenses on their behalf at threepence per license. The Waimea County Council advised that the council’s letter regarding the Emergency Precaution Scheme had been considered and that the following resolutions had been passed . (1) That the Motueka Borough Council be informed that this council is not prepared to consider the suggestion of a punt and cable from Staples Blue Gum to the Motueka Bridge to provide access to Riwaka in the event of a flood as access is available via Alexander Bluff Bridge: (2) That the provision of an alternative method of communication with Riwaka in the event of the main telephone line to Riwaka across the Motueka River being destroyed be referred to the engineer to investigate: (3) That the engineer be instructed to communicate with the Motueka River Board on the question of repairing breaches in the river bank from Woodman’s Corner to Whakarewa street in ' the event of a flood, and that the board be informed that the council is prepared ; to provide 1000 empty cement bags, to be stored at Motueka. to be used in the ' event of a breach being made in the ; river banks during a flood; (4) That the ' engineer be and is hereby authorised to | deal with the question of the installa- ’ tion of depth gauges in rivers. It was agreed that the letter be re- ’ ferred to the Emergency Precautions Committee. The Clerk was instructed to write to ' the Waimea County Council thanking ! them for the donation of cement bags 1 for use in time of floods. The matter of painting the depth gauge on the ' Alexander Bluff bridge was referred to ' the works committee with power to act. It was resolved that in view of the j reply received from Waimea County 1 Council and as the area concerned f is in the Waimea County the Emergency 1 Precaution Scheme Committee be in- ; formed that the council cannot accede - to its request in regard to the placing of a wire rope and punt at Staples In response to an application it was ? decided that Mr StefTensen be granted - the grazing rights on York Park, Mo- - tueka Beach, at the rate of Is per - annum for a term of three years. L ' The foreman, Mr W. Anderson report- * ed that cattle were knocking in the sides of the Thorp drain and thus causing obstructions. It was decided that the clerk write to

the owners of land adjacent to the ‘ Thorp drain asking for their co-opera-tion in placing a fence along the sides of the ditch. . LAST MEETING At the conclusion of the general business Mr Hulbert thanked the councillors for their assistance and co-opera-tion during his term of office as deputy. Mayor and for the period he had been 5 Mayor after the death of Mr R. J. L. York. He thanked the Town Clerk J fir his helpful advice and expressed the ' hope that the borough and council 1 would continue to progress, and added that his term of office had been an en- 1 joyable one. Cr Canavan said he was not seeking re-election as he felt he had reached the age when he should stand aside for the younger generation. He had differed in opinion on many occasions at the council table but invariably a reasonable conclusion had been reached. He believed the future of the Dominion depended more on the quality of the men I elected to local bodies than to parliament. The real education of the people commenced when they left school and he considered they should be encouraged to read more. The Motueka Library was giving excellent service and stocking a class of books that was ' not procurable before. He wished the council success in the future. Mr Cana- 1 van thanked the Mayor, councillors, and . Town Clerk for the many courtesies j shown him. : The deputy-Mayor. Cr Fry, and Councillors Eginton, Whitwell and Hickmot also spoke of their pleasant associa- , tion with the council.
