LOWER MOUTERE
FAREWELL TO HEADMISTRESS I A large number of residents of the * district met at the Lower Moutere School to bid farewell to the Headmistress, Mrs J. M. Anderson, who is leaving to take up a position at Ngaio, Wellington. Proceedings opened with a concert by the pupils, which was very much enjoyed by all. The plays, singing and dancing were of a high standard and a credit to the children who were the organisers. A very appropriate number was a play entitled, "Trying Out the New Teacher.” Under the chairmanship of Rex Krammer, the perfect Hazel Jackett | made a presentation on behalf of the pupils to Mrs Anderson, who was also , the recipient of a beautiful bouquet. The chairman of the School Committee, W. J. Davis, stated that during her long term of 13 years as headmistress, Mrs Anderson had built up 1 and maintained a high standard of ' work in the school ancl what was of ; even greater importance, a high moral { tone. The greatest tribute he could pay to Mrs Anderson was that she had ( gained not only the respect but the j affection of her pupils. He then pre- <
i ~ sented Mrs Anderson with a cheque, jon behalf of the residents of the district and wished her health and happiness and success in her new position. I Mrs Anderson, in thanking the (people for their gift, asked that the loyalty, which had always been shown to her by the parents and committees past and present, should be extended, to the new headmaster, Mr Liddicoat. Mr F. H. Carling, speaking on behalf of the Nelson Education Board recalled that when Mrs Anderson was appointed headmistress at Lower Moutere, a storm of protest arose from the school committee against a lady being appointed. After she had occupied the position for a time their attitude was completely changed and they would not entertain the idea of her leaving. While afternoon tea was being handed round parents and friends took the opportunity of saying their personal farewells.
