MOTUPIPI FUNCTION
LEADING AIRCRAFTSMAN PACKARD ENTERTAINED
While on leave recently Leading Aircraftsman N. Packard was the guest of honour at a card party and dance in the Motupipi School, which was largely attended by residents of the Takaka district. A cordial welcome and good wishes were extended to Leading Aircraftsman Packard by Mr K. W. Baird, chairman of the Motupipi patriotic committee. Mr N. L. Bensemann, chairman of the Takaka Soldiers’ Send-off Committee, presented a gift parcel to the guest of honour, accompanying it with good wishes and congratulations, which were endorsed and supplemented by the county chairman, Mr A. H. Rose. On behalf of the Motupipi Cricket Club, Mr D. E. Winter also made a small presentation to Leading Aircraftsman Packard, who, he said, had captained the club’s junior team prior to commencing his training as a pilot and, in addition, had ably represented Takaka in “K” Cup matches. A further presentation was made by Mr M. V. Humphrey on behalf of the Loyal Takaka Lodge of Oddfellows, of which Leading Aircraftsman Packard was a valued member. Leading Aircraftsman Packard suitably replied and was accorded musical honours.
Those successful at cards were Mrs Byrne and Mr M. V. Humphreys. The consolation prizes went to Mrs H. Coppell and Mr A. Edmondson. The Monte Carlo was won by Mr and Mrs A. H. Rose. Mr W. Bosher was master of ceremonies and music for dancing was played by Mrs Val Page, Mrs Frank Lewis contributing extras. The ladies served a tasty supper and the function concluded at a late hour with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem.
