COLOGNE BOMBED
WIDESPREAD AIR OPERATIONS SUPPLY SHIP HIT (British Official Wireless) (Rec. 10.57 a.m.) Rugby, Apl. 21. Widespread air operations over Europe are reported in an Air Ministry communique which states that last night aircraft of the bomber command attacked objectives in Cologne. The weather was bad and the results difficult to observe, but large fires were seen.
Other aircraft bombed objectives in Dusseldorf, Aschen, and several aerodromes in German-occupied territory, and oil stores at Rotterdam and the docks at Dunkirk and Ostend were also bombed. Three of our planes are missing. In daylight yesterday aircraft of the same command continued to seek out and attack enemy coastal shipping. Attacks were made on shipping off the Dutch coast and off the coast of Norway. A heavily laden supply ship of about three thousand tons was hit and left sinking. No aircraft is missing from these operations. The coastal command last night continued attacks on the docks of Brest. Visibility was poor but bursts were seen on the quays and near the dry dock. Other aircraft of the same command bombed an enemy aerodrome near Caen. None of our planes are missing from these operations. The Germans have attacked Malta every night for the past week, making large-scale bombing raids and machine-gunning indiscriminately in every direction. The damage is not as extensive as could be expected and the death-roll is fairly small.
