BOARD'S MONTHLY MEETING NO INCREASE IN CHARGES CONSIDERED SATISFACTORY REVENUE FIGURES The monthly meeting of the Nelson Harbour Board held last evening was attended by Messrs A. Gould (chairman), A. ii Kingsford. J. B. Carr, G. Manson. H. W. Kelly, W. B. Griffin. J. H. Biunt, and H. W. Chisnall. An apology for absence was received from Mr A. E. Max. The chairman reported as follows on the revenue of the board during the month of March, with comparative figures for the same period last year:—

j The chairman stated that while some boards in New Zealand considered it necessary to increase wharf charges, the Nelson Board had not yet considered it For the reclamation work the board had used the funds it was holding The board had decided not to proceed with any capital work and the result showed the wisdom of the board’s decision. The board felt that it could continue without an increase in fees. The board had made a sacrifice in letting the Government have No. 5 shed for a cool store, but it was thought that the board could continue op its present basis. CORRESPONDENCE The chairman (Mr Gould) was appointed as a representative of the Harbour Board on the St. John Ambulance Association executive. The Chief Engineer, New Zealand Railways Department, advised that there was no objection to the board's proposal to widen wharf road and shift the railway platform. Tne Public Works Engineer advised that the Department was willing to provide a new platform. The letters were received. The Port Shed lessees wrote suggesting that a committee of lessees and a representative of the board be appointed to control the boat shed. Captain Christie was appointed as the board’s representative on the committee. The Anchor Shipping Company, as agents for the Holm Company, wrote placing on record its appreciation of the assistance of Captain Christie and the pilot staff in connection with the stranding of the Holmglen at Port Mapua. It was reported that the Holmglen stranded on a bank on one tide and was refloated off on the next. HARBOURMASTER’S REPORT The Harbourmaster, Captain Christie, reported as follows : “The number of vessels entering the port for the month of March was 84. and the departures numbered 85. The amount of registered tonnage for the month was 25,913, as compared with 28.286 tons for the corresponding period last year. The damaged submarine cable tr Haulashore Island has been lifted and the new cable laid. The amount of cable used was 1500 feet. The new cable has been allowed to lie for a f ew days before being connected up I request permission to have the old cable overhauled and tested. “A visit of inspection was paid to M'pua during the month. The number • of vessels arriving during March 14 and departures lumbered 14. The amount of tonnage was 1765. The placing of the extra wharf lights has been completed The signal lights have also been completed.” WHARFINGER’S MONTHLY REPORi Tne Wharfinger (Mr J. Harris) reported that the following cargo was received at the Nelson wharves for the month of March, with comparative fig- res for March, 1940 in parentheses: Inwards, 10.022 tons (9273); outwards, 5798 tons (4754); total, 15,820 (14,027); showing an increase of inward cargo oi 749 tons, and outward cargo'of 1044 tons, total increase 1793 tons. Port Mapua.—lnwards, 96 tons (169); outwards. 6650 (5432); total, 6746 tons (5601); showing a decrease of inward cargo of 73 tons, and an increase of outward cargo of 1218 tons, total increase 1145 tons. Throughout the past months the wharves were kept exceptionally busj' and quite a large amount of inward and outward cargo was handled. During the month the coastal tanker that arrived here discharged 392,963 gallons of bulk petrol
