GIANT STARFINDER WEIGHS 35 TONS
BRITAIN SHIPS ENORMOUS MIRROR TO SOUTH AFRICA The last component of the largest telescope south of the Equator is about to leave England for the Radcliffe Observatory in Pretoria. It is an enormous glass mirror and it was only completed at the fourth attempt. They took eighteen months to do the job.
This giant 74-inch reflecting astro- | nomical telescope is a marvel for the perfection of its mechanical components and for the accuracy of its optical parts. The mirror, for example, achieves, in terms of light waves, an accuracy of twenty millionths of an inch. The movable parts of this triumph of British science applied to industry weigh 35 tons, but such is the beauty of their workmanship that a single human finger can set the whole in motion.
