OVERCROWDED HOSPITAL

POSITION AT WELLINGTON MINISTER’S INSPECTION [United Press Association] WELLINGTON, 11th February. The urgent need for additional hospital accommodation in Wellington was emphasised by the Minister of Health (Mr Nordmeyer) in an interview to-day, after an inspection of the Wellington Public Hospital. “The question of overcrowding is even more serious than I imagined,” he said, “and whatever decision is made in regard to the Centennial block it is quite clear that some increased accommodation will have to be found without delay.”

The Minister said that the need was particularly urgent in view of the fact that they did not know when a large number of soldier patients might have to be accommodated at very little notice.

He said he had been authorised by his colleague, the Minister of Finance (Mr Nash) to state that exchange difficulties would not be permitted to stand in the way of new hospital construction. If it were physically possible to bring to this country the material required and to engage the labour required, the necessary overseas funds would be made available.
