CANADIAN DESTROYER LIMPS INTO PORT TWENTY-ONE MEN MISSING [ U.P.A.—By Electric Telegraph-Copyright] OTTAWA, 9th December. A naval communique announced: “His Majesty’s Canadian ship Saguenay (destroyer) was damaged by a torpedo while engaging an enemy submarine in the eastern Atlantic. Twenty-one men are missing and are presumed to have been killed in the action and 18 ratings were wounded. “The Saguenay has reached port and is at present being repaired.” It is learned unofficially that the Saguenay attacked the submarine when the latter attempted to attack a fleet of merchantmen under the destroyer’s care. The submarine is reported to have submerged under heavy gunfire and .fighting defensively, it discharged one torpedo before it fled. Captain C. R. Miles commanded the Saguenay. BELOW AVERAGE WEEK’S SHIPPING LOSSES LONDON, 10th December. Merchant shipping losses for the week ended Ist December totalled 52,000 tons, which is 10,00*~ tons below the weekly average. The losses consisted of nin: British ships of 41,300 tons, three Allied ships of 5700 tons and one neutral ship of 5000 tons.
