APPEALS HEARD AT MOTUEKA BY MAX-POWER COMMITTEE I Appeals on behalf of men drawn in the second ballot for service with the 1 New Zealand Territorial Forces were heard by the Nelson Man-Power Committee at the Courthouse. Motueka, yesterday. The committee consisted of Messrs G. L. Page (chairman), W. Black and J. Dicker. Eleven cases were dealt with. Edward John Fry. personal appeal on ! the grounds of public interest and undue hardship.—Fry said he was working a farm, which included an area of tobacco, single handed, and that the ■ farm required his attention until May. The appeal on the ground of public interest was upheld, and the case adjourned till 30th April, and that of undue hardship dismissed. Reginald Arthur Borck. —Appeals were lodged by the reservist and by his parents, Mr and Mrs W. L. Borck. Borck said he was working for his father, who was 71 years of age, and v/ho was at present receiving medical attention. He was the only son at home to work the farm. The appeals of undue hardship and public interest were upheld, and the case adjourned sine die. John Joseph Garrohy.—This appeal was on the grounds of public interest in that he was a parish priest. The appeal was upheld and the case adjourned sine die. Lance Grooby.—An appeal was made by his employer. Mr John Martin, who said Grooby was an experienced tobacco worker, and would be hard to replace. He was anxious to go into camp when the harvesting of the tobacco was finished. The appeal was upheld and the case j aojourned till 30th April. Ivan Leigh Tomlinson. —An appeal for postponement of service on the grounds of public interest was made by his employer, Mr Martin H. Thorn, who said Tomlinson had worked for Him for twelve years. He (the applicant) had sheep and tobacco, and Tomlinson, besides being his main tobacco picker, was capable of taking charge of the farm of 8000 acres, a large portion of which was in the Mt. Arthur district. The appeal was upheid and the case adjourned till 30tli April. Keith Graydon Simpson, a voluntary territorial not drawn in the ballot.—A personal appeal was made on the grounds of undue hardship of a domestic nature. The appeal was upheld and the case adjourned till 30th April. Kenneth Campbell Strachan.—An appeal of undue hardship was made by his brother, Mr Charles P. Strachan. who said he was not physically capable of taking over and carrying on the necessary work on his brother s farm at present, but could manage when most of the season’s work was finished. The appeal was upheld and the case adjourned till 30th April. Charles Edwin Holmstrom. —An appeal on the grounds of undue hardship was made by his father. Mr Albin Hjalmar Holmstrom. who said he was an orchardist and his son did nearly all the work. He required Mm for the picking and packing season. The appeal was upheld and the case adjourned till 30th April. Allan Stilwell. a voluntary territorial. —An appeal was made by his employers, Messrs W. and W. F. Stilwell, Ltd., for a postponement of service until May, 1941. Mr P. G. Craig, who represented the applicants, said Stilwell was an experienced machinist, and he was required in connection with the increased orders for box timber his firm had received. The appeal was, upheld and the case adjourned till 30th April. Alexander Moffatt.—Applicant, who could not attend the Nelson sitting of the committee, forwarded a statement to the effect that his father was an old man of 74 years, and could not work his .sheep and dairy farm. Moffatt stated in his appeal that besides looking after his father’s farm he was an experienced shearer. The appeal of undue hardship and public interest was upheld and the case adjourned sine die.
