FUNERAL YESTERDAY | SERVICE AT COUNCIL CHAMBERS Striking tributes to the respect and ; esteem in which the late Mr R. J. L. York, Mayor of Motueka, was held in the Motueka district, were paid on 1 Tuesday afternoon when the funeral took place at the Motueka cemetery in 1 the presence of a very large attendance of the public. Numerous beautiful floral emblems bore additional testimony to the sterling worth of one who | laboured untiringly in the interests of ’ the borough. The cortege was one of the longest seen in the district for some years, and included representatives of all local bodies and institutions with which the late Mr York had been associated —the | Mayor of Nelson (Mr G. L. Page), the ' Waimea Electric Power Board. Nelson Manpower Committee. Motueka Harbour Board. Motueka Branch N.Z. Lab- , our Party. Motueka Patriotic Control- , ling Committee. Motueka Safe Bathing Society. Motueka Fire Brigade, Moj tueka Caledonian Society. Kaiteriteri Domain Board. Motueka Borough Coun_ , cillors, Town Clerk and Borough staff. After leaving his late residence, King Edward street, the funeral procession , proceeded along to the Council Cham- , bers. where an impressive service was , conducted by the Rev. H. V. Utting, as- , sisted by the Rev. G. King, and Captain Home of the Salvation Army. . The Rev. Mr Utting, in his address, , referred to the late Mr York’s work for r the church. Throughout his life he had been inspired by ideals of brotherhood and Christianity, and for many years , was local preacher, cycling to Dovedale ■ and Woodstock, which were included in his circuit, and conducting his last seri vice less than seven years ago. i Mrs Wesney presided at the organ for the singing of the hymn “Forever with [ the Lord.” At the graveside, the Rev. H. V. Utting again officiated, while the Rev. i P. Kirkham read the Scripture and Mr M. J. Savage offered up prayer. Two verses of the hymn. ‘‘Abide With Me” were sung, the Municipal Junior Band, under the leadership of Mr Gerald Green, playing the accompaniment. The pall bearers were the DeputyMayor (Mr S. E. Hulbert), Councillors A. E. Fry and W. Egifiton, and Messrs W Max. C. B. Webby and N. R. Mead (Waimea Electric Power Board).
