AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION MEETING FORMATION OF CARAVAN CLUB SUGGESTED The monthly meeting of the Automobile Association (Nelson) held last evening was attended by Dr. S. A. Gibbs (president), Messrs W. E. Wilkes, I. M. Deighton, F. V. Powell, R. F. East, E. A. Bone. C. A. Hunter, F. C. Smallbone, G. Cunningham, J. R. Leggo, B. T. Bishop, W. R. Martyn, E. R. Neale (secretary) and N. M. McLaren (Patrol Officer). Apologies for absence were (received from Messrs L. N. Montgomery, H. J. Savage, J. A, Harley, E. J. Champtaloup, E. Fleming and Dr. W. D. is. Johnston. The Secretary reported in connection with a request concerning the formation of a Nelson Caravan Club. An effort was being made to secure the names of all caravan owners in the province. It was decided to call a meeting of caravan owners and others interested late in January with a view to obtaining the opinion of owners on the proposal to form a club. The North Canterbury Association wrote advising that it had submitted a remit to the South Island Association in connection with a proposal to grant subsidies to Domain Boards which maintain motor camps other than those maintained by Automobile Associations. Consideration was deferred. The Secretary stated that he had unsuccessfully endeavoured to secure information concerning the possible petrol allowance in January. The S.I.M.U. had not forwarded a reply to an enquiry. PATROL OFFICER’S WORK The Patrol Officer submitted his report for the month. Ten new members had been signed up. Signposting in the fruit growing areas had been carried out. An A.A. display had been made at the Nelson A. and P. Show where the' parking of cars was supervised. The parking arrangements at the Motueka Show were also supervised. In the course of other duties nine roadside services were rendered. The President congratulated the Patrol Officer on the great improvement carried out with the signposting in the Moutere Hills area. Mr Wilkes referred to the work of the Patrol Officer in arranging the A.A. display, including 80 signposts, at the Nelson Show and he congratulated Mr McLaren on the excellent advertisement given to the Association as the result of his efforts. SHENANDOAH ROAD The Murchison County Council wrote advising that it had supported the Association’s protest against the closing down of work on the Shenandoah road and the Council stated that it had made a point of the strategical value of the road. It was decided that the Patrol Officer make enquiries and report on the probable cost of providing an A.A. picnic place between Takaka and Collingwood. NEW MEMBERS The following nineteen new members were elected: W. P. Allan (Nelson), G. Chant (Motueka), M. C. H. Cheek (Nel-‘ son), Mrs E. J. Currie (Richmond), V. L. Eban (Nelson), O. Evans (Umukuri), J. Failover (Motueka), C. Frost (Nelson), L. H. Grooby (R.M.D., Motueka), Major A. P. McCormack (Nelson), L. R. Palmer (Nelson), H. Petterson (Takaka), M. Rodgers (Tarakohe), Miss A. M. Searle (Tahunanui), V. R. Stade (Upper Moutere), L. J. Swann (Takaka), W. B. Travers (Nelson), C. E. Wood (Tasman), and J. C. Wyllie (Nelson). THEFT OF PETROL The Patrol Officer reported that he had received complaints from members in respect to the theft of their petrol while they were camping along the Grove road. It was decided to refer the matter to the Marlborough Association asking it to take appropriate action. DUST AT TAHUNA BEACH Mr Powell mentioned the dust nuisance at Tahuna beach when winds biew clouds of dust off the unsealed part of the parking area. The chairman and secretary were asked to interview the City Engineer on the matter. MARUIA SPRINGS It was decided to write to the Tourist and Health Department to get definite information as to the area set as ire for camping sites under the lease at Maruia Springs and to determine the amenities associated with the conditions. Before the meeting concluded Mr Wilkes, on behalf of members extended best wishes to the president for Christmas and the New Year. In reciprocating the members’ good wishes Dr. Gibbs thanked the members of the committee for their regular attendance at meetings and for the keen interest they took in the affairs of the Association.
