APPEALS HEARD

SERVICE WITH THE TERRITORIALS TO-DAY’S CASES AT NELSON n The Nelson Manpower Committee commenced the hearing in the Supreme e Court this morning of appeals on behalf 11 of men drawn in the second ballot for service with the New Zealand Territorial Forces.’ The committee consists of Messrs G. L. Page (chairman), W. Black and J. Dicker. There are 64 appeals to be heard in the Nelson, Golden Bay and Marlborough districts. The following cases were dealt with this morning:— Wm. Leonard R. Baker. —The appeal y was on the grounds that he was the - only child, and his mother, a widow, n was practically dependent on him for k support. A medical certificate stated that on account of his mother’s health - it was dangerous for her to be left r alone at night. There was an appeal by his employer. Mr Mawhinney, that n Eaker was engaged on aerodrome conv struction work, an essential industry. The application of the employer was i dismissed, and the appeal of Mrs Baker i was adjourned sine die. Kenneth Mayers, a voluntary Terrii. tcrial.—An appeal was made by his emy ployer, Mr Arch. Smith, who said that , he could not do without the boy in . the bacon industry or replace him. He 1 asked for a postponement. Mrs A. Mayers also appealed on account of the boy’s father’s health. She had three sons on active service overseas, and needed the assistance of this son. she said. The appeal of the employer was dis- : missed, but the appeal of Mrs Mayers was upheld and the case adjourned sine * die. ' Cyril J. Bridger, railway porter.— Appeal by the Director of National ser- ; vice on the grounds of public interest. * A postponement for six months was ' asked for. ■ The case was adjourned sine die with ; a revision in three months. Robert C. Mather (Port Hardy).—Appeal by Mr H. R. Duncan, owner of the Port Hardy property, running sheep : and cattle, who said that Mather was ' needed for the management of the farm. The case was adjourned sine die. Roderick John O’Connor.—Appeal by O’Connor Bros., farmers, who said that if the appeal was not granted they could not carry on the farm on account of their age. Mr Rod O’Connor appealed on the ground of hardship. An adjournment was granted till 30th April, when Mr O’Connor stated that the work would be easier. Richard R. Martin, voluntary Territorial. —The firm of Wm. Martin appealed on the ground of public interest. Applicants stated that they conducted a butchery business, and had several properties running sheep and cattle. The son was needed for the business. The chairman pointed out that the j committee had no power to grant total exemption. It was only a matter of ! finding the most suitable period for training. The case was adjourned till 30th April, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. Alan F. Denton, farmer, Matariki.— Personal appeal on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. The appeal was uphold and the case adjourned sine die. Cyril R. Davies. —Appeal by Albert E. Davies, his father, farmer, who stated that this was his only son. and he was needed on the farm for tobacco work. The appeal was upheld and adjourned till April. Paul S. Berkett. farmer. Whangamoa. —Personal appeal for a postponement till the winter. Applicant stated that he was buttermaking on his own and was unable to get suitable help. He said he was making 2701bs a week. An adjournment was allowed till 30th April. Peter L. Duke, voluntary Territorial. —Appeal by his father , Capt. C. R. Duke. It was explained that the son had been granted an adjournment till January, and a further postponement was asked for to allow the boy to finish his probationary period in the bank, as i+ might affect hL future in the bank. The boy was not of ballot age. The appeal was dismissed, subject to the boy not being required to enter camp before 31st March. Alexander Moffatt.—Applicant could not attend, and it was stated that he was sending a statement. The hearing was adjourned till the sitting at Motueka to-morrow.
