“THE NEW ORDER”

TURKISH DENUNCIATION “IMPOSSIBLE TO SUBSCRIBE TO IT” [British Official Wireless] RUGBY, 6th December. Comment on Hitler’s so-called new order which excites sympathetic interest here for its independence, and the shrewd preparation of which is likewise regarded by British commentators as a cynical sham, was made by the authoritative Istanbul newspaper “Yeniasir” on 3rd December. The paper observed: “What is known in Turkey about the ‘new order’ makes it impossible for Turks to subscribe to it, whether it is considered as a philosophical or an economical system. As regards the political aspect, the mere fact that it is a system imposed by force should make every free man recoil from it with horror. For Turkey i.cceptance of the new order would be tantamount to the surrender of her independence.” The paper went on to declare that Turkey would willing accept the new order if it was consecrated to right an’ justice, if it recognised the right to existence of small as well as great Powers, and if it insured the cooperation of all nations on a basis of unity. It strikes British peoph that it would be difficult to find better words to express those fundamental principles to defend which Britain and her allies have been driven to take up arms: the fundamentals of any European order without respect for her international order itself is impossible. This Turkish newspaper’s remarks therefore, bring into relief the fact that no Nazi propaganda can long obscure that it is Britain and her allies who may truly be said to be fighting for a new order in Europe, ,/hereas the sysI tern of political domination and economic exploitation which the Nazis are seeking to impose would mean the eclipse of the European economic order.
