FATAL ACCIDENT AT WHARF

WATERSIDE WORKER CRUSHED AGAINST TRUCK A waterside worker, Frederick William Townsend, widower, Washington Valley, was killed instantly on the Nelson wharves this morning when assisting with the unloading of the coastal vessel Port Waikato. Crates of cargo each weighing about four hundredweight, were being landed onto trailer trucks and Townsend was engaged in squaring them up when another sling containing two crates was swung out from the ship and crushed him against the truck. Towsend, who is about 67 years of age, has a young family. An inquest will be held.
