“THE BLUE BIRD”
Winning an Academy Award is a very handsome thing. But it has its unfortunate side as well. The authority for this statement is Gale Sondergaard. who is featured as Tylette. the cat. in the brilliant cast, including Shirley Temple and a score of other Hollywood favourites, which brings to life on the screen the beautiful and human store ' f Maurice Maeterlinck's "The Blue Bi :d." 20th Century-Fox production filmed in the new Technicolour. Miss Sondergaard who won her “Oscar" for her performance in “Anthony Arverse" has this to say: “It's one of those honours that are mighty nice to receive, but which carries a responsibility, too." A curious fact about Miss Sondergaard s role in "The Blue Bird" Is that ■t marks the first time a woman has played the role of a cat on the screen without the aid of trick make-up. In the stage presentations of Maeterlinck's masterpiece, the cat was always played by a man. It is a tribute to the actress’s ability that she achieves the feline characteristics entirely through her actmg technique.
