FAIR RENTS ACT

FINE FOR A BREACH , A charge under the Fair Rents Act was brought against Sylvia Harwood before Mr T. E Maunsell. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Defendant was charged that on or about 21st Septemoer at Nelson she obtained possession of a dwellinghouse in Cambr a street on the representation that she required it for her own occupation * and did let the house within a period f cf six months without first obtaining an authorising order of a magistrate. I said that the previous # tenant, Mr c Mathieson received notice in February, \ 1939, that Miss Harwood desired to take possession of her house from Ist April. She said the rent of 33s was not enough, but if he would pay 35s he cou'd have the house for 12 months from Ist March. Mr Mathieson agreed to pay the increased rent In April of | this year the owner said she desired! f possession by Ist June. Mr Mathieson could not get a house and had to build. C Miss Harwood could not agree to wait and said that if he stayed he would be l charged £2 a week after Ist June Mr 3 Mathieson vacated the house on 21st |) September and the present tenant.
