COD-LIVER OIL

CANADA’S CHANCE GREATLY INCREASED PRODUCTION OTTAWA, 22nd October. The war has brought a rapid expansion of cod liver oil processing in Canada. Up to a year ago 75 per cent of the cod liver oil used in Canada was imported. With the occupation of Norway, the main source of supply, it was decided to develop the Canadian industry in order to offset the shortage. MORE THAN TREBLED The progres made to date gives promise of ultimate self-sufficiency. Sixteen new cod liver oil plants are now operating on the Atlantic Coast and eight plants have enlarged their facilities looking to an increased outI put. Total production of cod liver oil c this year is expected to be approxi- ■ mately 200,000 gallons compared with ~ a production of 63,000 gallons in 1938 and 56,000 gallons in 1939. This oil is ; suitable for use as medicinal oil or as a feeding oil for livestock and poultry. ’ In addition a production of low-grade cod liver oil known in the trade as “common cod oil” and suitable only 1 for industrial uses amounting to 109,000 > gallons in 1938 and 120,000 gallons in : 1939, will be obtained. It is expected that 100,000 gallons of medicinal cocl liver oil will be produced by the three ‘ refining plants equipped to produce this type of oil. FEEDING OILS [ In addition to the increased produc- | tion of cod liver oil on the eastern ! coast, there has been a mc.rked in- : crease in the production of feeding oils . composed of fish oils produced on the west coast. These oils are fortified with vitamins and are sold in increasing large quantities in eastern Canada and in England and Australia. Steps are under way to secure more adequate laboratory testing facilities for vitamin oils. Already a laboratory for the testing of feeding oils has been j established by the Department of Agrij culture at Ottawa.
