Advice has been received that Cabinet hr.s sanctioned a grant for the demolition of the assembly hall at Nelson College. An interesting programme of Christmas music and carols will be rendered in the Cathedral to-morrow (Thursday) ac 7.45 p.m. Several old favourite carols will be included, also excerpts from Mendelssohn’s “Christus” and Cowen’s “St. John’s Eve,” and some seasonable organ pieces. An offertory will be taken, the proceeds being donated to a Christmas fund for St. Andrew’s Orphanage. Members of the Loyal Howard Lodge with their wives and their children under 14 years of age are cordially invited to attend the Christmas party arranged by the social committee of the Loyal Howard Lodge, to be held in the Oddfellows’ Hall to-morrow (Thursday) evening at 7 o’clock. It’s a queer thing but some men can never learn to smoke. The great Napoleon was like that. The first time he tried, we are told, the smoke got down his throat and into his eyes, and as soon as he could speak he spluttered ‘take that thing away.” So disgusted was he that he never tried again, and as usually happens in such cases became an anti-tobaccoite. The would-be smoker should begin with cigarettes, and can’t do better than get a tin of Riverhead Gold—or Desert Gold—the two leading cigarette tobaccos on the market, and roll his own. When he has got his prentice-hand in, so to speak, he can try a pipe of Cavendish or Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog) and later sample Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead)— full strength, and the old smoker’s favourite. These comprise the five famous toasted blends, renowned alike for tneir delicious flavour and beautiful bouquet. They are, being toasted, as pure as tobacco can be, and their widespread popularity is demonstrated b; the ever-increasing demand for them.* The last of a series of morning markets is being held by the Cathedral Ladies’ Guild on Friday, 6th inst. An advertisement drawing attention to this in to-night’s “Mail” makes a request for donations. A special appeal is made to parents of Sunday School children, as these efforts have been in aid of the Sunday School fund. Alfred Gould announces the following auction sales: To-morrow at Motueka, at 1 p.m., household furniture, car trailer, etc., at Horticultural Hall, opp. Rowlings’s Stables; Thursday. 12th inst at 1 p m.. household furniture, etc., on account Mr James Webster, 17A Erougham-st.*
