INTERLUDE IN HOUSE
PRIME MINISTER RAISES POINT OF ORDER [From Our Own Parliamentary Reporter] WELLINGTON, This Day. A reference to the Minister of Marketing (Mr Nash) as “the artful political dodger” in the House of Representatives last night caused some amusement when Mr D. C. Kidd (National, Waitaki) declared later that he had no intention of casting any reflection on the Minister. When the remark was made the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) rose to a point of order. It appeared to be a reflection on the Mh.ister and he asked that it should be withdrawn. The Speaker (Mr Barnard) said that the comment had rather a Dickensian flavour. “There was a character called the artful dodger,” he said, “but I don’t remember much about it.” A member: He was a pickpocket. Mr J. Thorn (Government, Thames): A very bad character. (Laughter). The Speaker said that he was sure that if objection was taken to the phrase the member would withdraw it. “There was nothing further from my mind than to cast any reflection on the Minister of Marketing,” Mr Kidd declared, and the incident closed with a burst of general laughter.
