GIRL ASSAULTED
PRISON SENTENCE FOR LABOURER [United Press Association] AUCKLAND, 14th June. For common assault committed on a young woman in a motor-car on a lonely road near Papatoetoe late on the night of 26th May, Robert Eric McCormick (27), labourer, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour. He pleaded guilty before Mr Levien, in the Magistrates’ Court to-day.
The police said that at the request of a soldier friend McCormick consented to drive the girl from the Papakura camp back to Auckland. Nearing Papatoetoe he turned down a side road telling her he was going to see a friend. When the girl attempted to jump out he pushed her down and
knocked a tooth out. When the car stopped she got out and screamed. !!• got her back intd the car and when two men appeared drove off. They chased and overtook him and got th# girl away from him. In passing sentence the magistral# remarked that he could not under* stand why McCormick was not more seriously.
