NELSON ROWING CLUB

SCLANDERS CUP TRIAL FOURS SATURDAY’S HEATS On Saturday afternoon the Nelson Rowing Club held the first of the club’s races for the Sclanders Cup trial fours. Two heats were rowed and some very good racing was witnessed. In the first heat McKenzie’s crew rowed Palamountain’s crew. This was a hard race, both crews getting a good start, and racing together for half the distance neither crew being able to gain the advantage, but at the three-quarter mile McKenzie’s crew gained a lead of half a length which they held to the finish. The second heat was rowed between Allen’s crew and Turley’s crew. This also was a good race. At the start Turley’s crew drew away to a lead of a length, but Allen’s crew, who were rowing a much longer stroke, drew level at the Pilot Shed and putting on a spurt just managed to gain a slight lead to win by half a length. The crews were:— First Heat: N. McKenzie (stroke), A. Louis (3), R. Sinclair (2), E. Kidson (1). G. Palamountain (s), A. McMillan (3), B. Brown (2), P. Ricketts (1). Second Heat: J. Turley (s), J. Sinclair (3), N. Burrell (2), H. Wyllie (1). J. Allen (s), R. McMillan (3), A. Mclver (2), A. Bennett (1). The final of this series will be rowed next week, and should produce a very good race as it is expected that both crews will get in a little more training and be all the better for the extra work.
