LARGE MEETING AT COUNCIL CHAMBERS RECONSTRUCTION OF COMMITTEE The Mayor (Mr Geo. Page) presided over a large meeting in the Council Chambers last night convened by the committee of the Nelson Red Cross to reconstruct their committee and fall into line with war-time regulations. After the singing of the National Anthem, his Worship thanked the large gathering for their attendance and explained that under the new regulations the Nurses’ Association, the St. John Ambulance and the Red Cross would work together.

After the routine business of minutes and adoption of last balance sheet, the committee would retire and the public would have ail opportunity of electing a new committee.

After routine business was concluded his Worship asked Miss J. Tomlinson (hon. secretary) if it would be possible to give the names of the original committee now resident in Nelson. The following is the list. (Apologies are tendered by the committee if anyone is omitted) : Mesdames Lock, Jacka, C. R. Fell, Robison, Brundell, Buchanan, Kemp, Leaper, H. C. Cock, C. Harley, Frank Hamilton. Lemmer, Sclanders, Tasker, Bisley. Cockburn, V. Rout, Squires, Wallace Snodgrass, Walter Snodgrass, Vining, Pharazyn, Green. Styche, Leggo, Edwards, Hoby, Washbourn, F. A. Bett, S. A. Lucas, Jeffreys, S A. Gibbs. H. M. Field, Misses Green, Andrew, Blackett, Boor, England, Davidson. Sclanders. Gilkison. HunterBrown. G. Clark, Bisley, Richmond, Hair, F. Maginnity, Cooke, Ledger. Oldham and Tomlinson, Drs. Bett, Gibbs. Washbourn, Stoney Johnston, Messrs J. P. Hayes, H. R Duncan, C. R. Fell, Fred and Frank Hamilton. J. Wigzell. It was resolved, and carried unanimously, that the old committee be a nucleus for the new committee.

The Mayor read a message from Miss Richmond suggesting that Mrs Lock be appointed patron of the new committee. This was seconded by Mrs C. R. Fell and carried unanimously. The election of officers resulted as follows:

President: Lady Rigg. Chairman; Dr. S. A. Gibbs.

Hon. Treasurer.- Mr W. J. Glasgow. Hon. Secretary: Miss J. Tomlinson. The following were proposed for the committee: The Bishop of Nelson. Father Seymour, Mr Maunsell, Major Dagger, a. representative cf the Ministers’ Association, a representative of the Mothers’ Union, the Mayor and Mayoress the Member’s wife (Mrs Atmore), all ex-officers, and Nelson doctors; Mesdames H. G. Day, Fuller, Griffin, Carlyon, Plumridge, Brereton, Craighead, Hudson, Bailie, E. R. Neale, Hunt, Rowe. Searle. Earle Johnson. J. A. Harley, Misses.Karsten, Janet Moore, Mavis Carmichael, Yolande Marsh, Clark. Andrew, F. Cooke, Messrs Searle. E. R. Neale, J. A. Harley, with power to add.

Mr J. A. Harley proposed and Dr. Gibbs seconded that the committee appoint their own executive and meet at the Council Chambers next Monday night at 7.30 o’clock for this purpose. Dr. Gibbs stated that at the meeting held in the afternoon in connection with emergency precautions, the Red Cross was asked to co-ordinate with the Nurses’ Association and the St. John Ambulance Association to provide at least 50 V.A.D.'s to be trained at the Hospital. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair. The Nelson Red Cross includes the following districts: — Nelson: Tahuna, Port Nelson. Stoke ; Richmond. Hope, Ranzau.
