NELSON GUN DOG CLUB

FIELD AND WATER TRIALS SATURDAY’S EVENTS The field and water trials held by the Nelson Gun Club at Appleby on Saturday were very well attended, a large number of spectators being present. While the meeting was primarily designed for the encouragement of novice dogs and puppies, several individual performances would have graced any competition. Of course the dash and certainty of the older dogs was not so much in evidence. Several very smart performances were marred by the nervousness of the handler, mostly in evidence during the retrieve. One dog came beautifully up to hand to be greeted by a nervous roar from his handler. Dogs are quick to feel lack of confidence. Several new dogs of real n.erit appeared, and gave every evidence of careful training. They will be prominent in any competition given time and experience. Puppy trial—Mr J. Colquhoun’s Labrador puppy, “Rex of Greenacres,” i9B points), 1; Mr P. Harley’s English Setter b, “Snow,” (90 points), 2; Mr Bennett’s Labrador puppy, “Biddy of Greenacres” (83 points), 3. Novice hand trial—Mr M. Cussen’s English Setter b “Charm” (76 points), 1; Mr P. Harley’s “Snow” (75 points), 2: Mr G. Burrough’s Spaniel dpg “Peter” (70 points) 3. Novice water trial —Mr P. Pye-Smith, representing the Nelson Kennel Club, a particularly pleasing gesture. The beautiful afternoon contributed to the enjoyment, and to finish up a non-sight retrieve was held, which was won by Mr H. Harley’s dog.
