HITLER’S REPLY

SUGGESTION TO NEGOTIATE FIGHTING TO RIGHT A WRONG COMMENT IN LONDON SITUATION SLIGHTLY DETERIORATED lI.P.A—By Electric Telegraph—Copy right’ (Received 28th August, 1.50 p.m.) LONDON, This Day. The Berlin Propaganda Ministry at 12.15 issued the text of the personal letter from Herr Hitler to M. Daladier, which included: “I make clear the demand that Danzig and the Corridor must be returned. If fate should force us to fight again I should be fighting to right a wrong. I am aware of the consequences, the heaviest of which would fall on Poland, because, however, the fight ended, Poland would not exist as the same State.” LONDON, This Day. Political circles in London consider that while Herr Hitler’s rejection of M. Daladier’s proposal on which the Quai d’Orsay refuses to comment, has slightly deteriorated the situation, all is not lost. All interest now centres on Britain’s reply on 28th August and Germany’s response. “The Times” points out that 10,000,000 men are under arms in Europe, and emphasises that nothing can be said about the British reply until it is drafted, but only minor details of the wording will be adjusted in this statement of policy whereon the Cabinet is unanimously agreed and the Government’s first concern will be to confirm Britain’s undertaking to Poland, which all Britain’s armed forces would honour immediately Poland’s vital interests are attacked. The decision between peace and war lies not with Britain but Berlin. This country is ready which ever way the choice may fall. There is no question that negotiation could not solve, but the German threat makes negotiations at present impossible. There at least would have to be a truce with the British guarantee still in force before negotiations could succeed.

The British United Press correspondent at Berlin says that the publication of the letter is interpreted in many quarters as a decisive refusal to negotiate on the Dazing corridor. The Berlin correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain says that the Propaganda Ministry called a Press conference early this morning. NO MESSAGE TO FRENCH PRESIDENT (Received 28th August, 1.50 p.m.) PARIS, This Day. It is officially denied that Herr Hitler sent a message to M. Lebrun, French President RUSSIAN MILITARY ATTACHE RECALLED (Received 28th August, 1.50 p.m.) BERLIN, This Day. Russia has recalled her military attache. Colonel Grassixnov.
