Mr Mackenzie King, appealed to Herr Hitler, President Moscicki. and Signor Mussolini “to prevent the impending disaster and catastrophe” in the first public declaration that Canada stood ready to join Britain if war broke out. Mr Kings messages said the Canadians were prepared "to join what authority and power they may possess to that of the other nations of the British Commonwealth in seeking a just and amicable settlement of the great problems with which the nations are faced.” The appeals were transmitted yesterday. but were not announced till to-day to assure their being received before
being published in Canada. The Defence Minister, Mr MacKcnzie, announced that "certain portions of the Canadian militia are being called out for duty on a voluntary basis” to bolster the permanent force in manning coastal defence and guarding certain vulnerable points. Mr Mackenzie has cancelled all leave in the permanent forces, consisting of 4000 in the army, 3000 in the air force, and 2000 in the navy.
