The Defence Minister, Mr MacKcnzie, announced that "certain portions of the Canadian militia are being called out for duty on a voluntary basis” to bolster the permanent force in manning coastal defence and guarding certain vulnerable points. Mr Mackenzie has cancelled all leave in the permanent forces, consisting of 4000 in the army, 3000 in the air force, and 2000 in the navy.
