United Service of Prayer By reason of the critical international situation a short united service of prayer is to be held daily this week in the Cathedral at 5 p.m. In the Year 2940 .... Importers have been very concerned lately about the rationing of sterling funds for payment for imports (states the “Dtago Daily Times”). One Dunedin firm has every reason to be perturbed and yet its staff treats the position far from seriously. The firm wished to send £725 overteas, but was, of course, told that this could not be done all at once. It was permitted by the Reserve Bank to send a contribution of £IBO in September, but the balance had to be sent at later dates and those dates were in January. February, and May in the year 2940! Members of the firm are still chuckling at the typist’s touch of unconscious humour and remark that she may not be so very wrong after all. Import Licences The secretary of the Otago Importers and Shippers’ Association, at the request of members, recently sent forward an inquiry to the Comptroller of Customs in Wellington as to when licences to import, as from Ist January to 30th June next will be issued. A reply has been received from the Comptroller to the effect that an endeavour will be made to reach a decision in that regard as early as possible, but it is regretted that the department is not, at present, in a position to advise as to when such licences may be issued.
