FIRE PREVENTION AND WATER SUPPLY FARMERS’ UNION TO MEET MOTUEKA COMMITTEE j s “That Messrs E. S. Wratt, K. J. Holyoke and D. Dobbie (Water , 5 Supply Committee) be deputed to confer with the Motueka Fire Prej ventlor Committee, on a date to be s arranged, with a view to gathering information in respect to (1) a Charges for services of Fire Brigade, (?) Water supply require- , nients for Riwaka was a resolution passed at the monthly meeting of the Motueka-Riwaka branch of the j* New Zealand Farmers’ Union held > ln th c Riwaka Library on Saturday 1 evening, when Mr E. S. Wratt prej sided over a good attendance of members. * The chairman in opening the discus- | sion on the question of fire prevention ! ancl a water supply for the Riwaka I district (matters introduced at the j previous meeting and held over for fur- | ther information) said that it was the usual custom for the adjacent local authority with fire fighting appliances f jto make these available to the outer ; area at a charge agreed upon between jthe parties concerned. He thought that i the people in the outer area were j ■ desirous of having protection for. their I properties it would be necessary to go i . into the matter fully so that some con- I * crete information could be placed be- ! fore them. i Mr O. C. Wilkinson pointed out that j there were quite a number of valuable j buildings in the Riwaka area that were j worth protecting, but at present a I water supply was lacking. Mr W. Eginton informed the meeting that under the new agreement between the Motueka Bofough Council and the Fire Brigade it was the intention to confine the activities of the brigade to a given area. He thought that this was only fair to the ratepayers of the bori ough and to the Fire Brigade. He be- ' lieved, however, that there was a desire j on the part of some people that a con-' ( ! ferenee of representatives of the Bor- i I ough Council, Fire Brigade, and Farm- I j ers's Union be hold for the purpose of i discussing the matter of service in I Riwaka. Mr W. A. A. Ryder contended that it ' was not fair and equitable to ask the ' Motueka Borough Council to send over l their fire-fighting plant until there was j a suitable water supply in Riwaka. | Mr Eginton said that as chairman of , 1 ] the Borough Water Works Committee j‘ ; he had been informed by the Engineer, j I who was investigating the matter, that I j the whole scheme would cost in the j ! vicinity of £IOO.OOO, and of this amount ! J Riwaka would have to be prepared to ! contribute £40.000 if that area wished | to participate in the scheme, j He pointed out that special ten inch I pipes would be necessary to convey the ! water from the site of supply, and these • ■ ■ were very expensive. Mr Wilkinson suggested that the l Farmers’ Union appoint a deputation J to wait on the Motueka Fire Prevention I Committee with a view to discussing the I question of charges for services of the | brigade. i In reply to an enquiry by Mr T. | Kelling as to the advisability of calling Ja public meeting of interested Riwaka i and district residents the chairman '] stated that much information was re- ! j quired which could be obtained at the j | proposed conference—before a public j 1 ] meeting was convened. : The foregoing resolution, proposed by j (j Messrs Kelling and G. Hobson, was j ! i then put and carried. ' PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE ] MEETING Mr Wratt reporting on the business j I transacted at the Provincial Executive l meeting held at Nelson on 14th August j stated that efforts were being made , to have the price of benzine reduced 1 in Nelson since it was higher there than j in other places in New Zealand where ' bulk stores were situated. Other matters explained were: Grant j towards expenses of Sheep Industry Commission, heavy traffic license fees, and Lime Commission. In respect to the Sheep Commission - Mr Wratt said the committee in Nelson f ] had been engaged four full days on this ; • j work, and he believed the Nelson Pro- ’ ‘ { vince was further ahead with the work j than any other district in New Zealand, j ! | CORRESPONDENCE ’ i Mr D. Merry, Instructor in Agricullure, Department of Agriculture, in reply to the branch’s letter advised that he proposed to give an illustrated lantern address on the value of certi- • fication. This would deal with the superiority of certified grass, clover t and crop seeds, and general matters 1 relevant to their use. s On the motion of Messrs O. C. Wil- \ kinson and T. Kelling it was decided [ that Mr Merry be invited to give his address at Riwaka at the next meeting of the branch, and that arrangements s for same be left to the chairman. The Director, CaWthrob Institute Association, wrote stating that with a view to securing a wider distribution among farmers and ofehardists of the publications of the Cawthron Institute-* it had been decided to reduce the subscription fee for full membership to £1 per annum. The Itioney received from ; subscriptions to the Cawthron Institute ; Association the writer slated w&s used i Cor the printing and distribution of rel ports and bulletins describing the work ! of the Institute. i The President, Nelson Provincial ' Council forwarded a circular letter in j respect to increase in the annual sub- ~ i scriplion.—Received.
