A woman professor of botany has [ been appointed director of the auxiliary territorial service, army branch, with | the rank of chief controller She is Dame Helen Gwynne Vaughan. She is professor of botany at the University of London, but is best known to the general public as chief controller ol Queen Mary’s Auxiliary Corps with the British Armies in France during the Great War and later as commandant of the Women’s Royal Air Force. The strength of the auxiliary territorial service, the formation of which was announced in September, is now 912 of- : fleers and 16.547 members. The corps' was created to release men from performing certain military duties.
