APPLEBY BRIDGE

NEW STRUCTURE TO BE ERECTED CAUSE FOR DEI AY EXPLAINED STATEMENT BY HIGHWAYS COUNCIL CHAIRMAN An assurance that the old Appleby bridge would shortly be replaced by a new structure was given bv the chairman of the No. 11 District Highways Council, Mr T. A. Johnston. District Public Works Engineer, at the annual meeting of the council to-day. In answer to a question by Mr J. Corner (Waimea County Council* in regard to the stage reached by the Main Highways Board in connection with the renewal of the bridge. Mr Johnston said he was pleased he could make a cVfinite statement on the matter. The work had been delayed by the transfer of the Department's draughtsmen to the work in connection with the -rush in the development of Air Force aerodromes, which was considered a matter of national urgency. As soon as the plans and specifications had been completed, tenders for the construction would be called. The commencement of construction would depend on the receipt of the necessary steel, but no undue delay was anticipated. “The matter has not been lost sight of by fhc Department, and personally 1 consider it the most important of the urgent work in the district.” added Mr Johnston.
