CENTENNIAL PARK

TAHUNANUI VENTURE TOWN HOARD'S PART IN SCHEME COST TO RATEPAYERS LESS ! THAN £ 100 The fact that the Tahunanui Town . Board had only committed itself to an expenditure of less than £IOO in connection with the formation of the Ce.-i- ! tennial Memorial Park at Tahunanui : was stressed by the chairman of the board, Mr C. H. Chamberlain, at a board meeting last evening. Quite a number of people apparently imagined that the cost of the proposed ! Centennial Memorial Park scheme would be borne by ratepayers, said Mr ; Chamberlain, but this was not the ease. | The Town Board had almost concluded i its share of the work in connection i with the scheme and it was proposed to call a meeting of ratepayers to form ' a committee which would become ; responsible for the project although 1 the board would continue to give j what assistance it could without mak- ; ing a charge on the rates. "We are rather unfortuntae in Tahun- i anui so far as recreation grounds are i concerned.” added the chairman. “We have the ToswiJl Trust reserve with j two tennis courts and a croquet lawn. I but those arc all the amenities we have ] for nearly 1000 people. When the board j had to decide on a centennial memorial | for the district it looked round for i a means of giving residents recreation 1 facilities at low cost and were success- j ful in obtaining an area of approxi- j rnately six acres which was given tu f the board by two landowners.” To obtain an access road to the area t a strip of land costing £6O had to be. purchased, continued Mr Chamberlain. and other than that the ratepayers had to find no money at all. Spoil for filling had been given and the Government had come to light with men to quarry the soil and construct the foundations of the road. Wha‘ futurework was done would have to be financed by the Centennial Memorial Committee which would be set up shortly. They would raise the money by subscription and any other means they might decide on and these funds would be subsidised by the Government. “The Board does not contribute in any way to the cost of the Tahunanui Sands reserve, as was suggested recently in a let*. ;»• to the “Evening Mail” said Mr Chamberlain. “Nor does it have anythibg to do with the beach tennis courts or the Tahunanui Golf Club as was f ’so suggested.”
