“WELCOME NEWS”

PUSHING AHEAD OF COBB SCHEME POWER BOARD CHAIRMAN EXPRESSES GRATIFICATION ’ AT PRIME MINISTERS ASSURANCE In an interview to-day regarding the Cobb River scheme, the Mayor of Motueka, Mr R. J, L. York, speaking in his capacity as chairman of the Waimea Electric Power Board, said that the news that the Cobb River electric works were to be pushed ahead either by the introduction of additional private capital or by the Government, would he welcome news to the users of electricity in the Nelson district. "Especially is it gratifying to have ! Prime Minister's assurance that there must be no undue delay,” said Mr York. “Some two months ago the three supply authorities and the Tara- ; kohe Cement Company approached the Government and the Company, pointing out the serious position the whole district was placed in. and requeuing that some definite statement should bcmade in order that the Power Board might know the exact position; and requesting the Government to take over the works or assist the Company financially to complete the undertaking: also asking for additional stand-by plant to be installed at an early dale to meet the demand in the meantime. “We were to have had supply of electricity from the Cobb River Company undertaking last August, so that it wiil be readily understood with the rapidly increasing load that the position will become progressively worse if we experience a dry summer. Also the long delay has held up reticulation of the country areas. “However, it is hoped that there will be no more serious delay and that a definite start will be made with further construction within the next month or two.”
