MISSING FINANCIER
HUNT ON CONTINENT DIFFICULTIES OF POLICE DP A —by Electric Telegraph-Copt right LONDON, 23rd June. Hope of locating John VVoolcott Forbes, financier, of Sydney, is fading, because of the negative outcome of a police search throughout the Continent. The difficulties of the police are intensified by the swarming of refugees across Europe. This is making the appearance ol strangers a common occurrence in even the tiniest of villages. A foreigner, thus, is no longer couspicious. Forbes, who escaped from custody in India, speaks Italian fluently, and the police consider it likely that he has left France for Italy, where there are so many secluded retreats. i His difficulty in obtaining a passport j would not be insuperable, because, the police believe, Forbes has friends. For instance, they say, he has not attended French raceeources since Detective-Ser-geant Nye came from Sydney to Europe, though, previously, he had appeared regularly. The officer is still working on a secret line of investigation, hoping to secure inj formation of Forbes’ whereabouts, concerning which he has had several anonymous advices investigated.
