WATERSIDE DISPUTE
NEW PLYMOUTH TROUBLE SETTLED l (JuiitfiJ A^ociaucml NEW PLYMOUTH, 28th June. Settlement of a waterside dispute concerning work on the Federal Line’s West, niorland was announced to-night by the agents, the Union Steam Ship Company, but, the terms were not made public. JSo work was done on the vessel to-day, except by one gang on a harbour board crane, but the agents stated that work would resume to-morrow. Because they objected to the way in which the winch gear was rigged, contend, ing that an extra wire should be attached to the block leading from the winch up the line to the derrick in case a pin holding the block to the mast might carry away and strike a winchman, four gangs totalling 86 men, stopped work this morning on the Federal steamer Westmorland, which was loading frozen meat and general cargo for the L T nited Kingdom. The men's demands, it is understood, were made yesterday, and as they were not met by the company the men refused to continue working. It is also stated that this particular type of gear is used on many ships, and only a few days ago at Auckland was passed to carry a load of more than six tons, whereas the usual New Plymouth ha; been one ton.
