BRITAIN’S LAND FORCES
NEW INSPECTOR-GENERAL SIR EDMUND IRONSIDE GIBRALTAR. 26th June. The former Governor of Gibraltar, General Sir Edmund Ironside, who has been appointed to the newly-revived position of Inspector-General of the British Overseas Forces, has left for England, via Spain. It is understood that he intends calling on General Franco. Sir Edmund is to be responsible for the inspection and higher training nf the regular and territorial field armies, for the inspection of overseas garrisons under the control of the War Office; for consultation, by arrangement with the Government of India, and the India Office, on matters of higher training ! with the Indian military authorities; \ for liaison with foreign staffs: and for the co-ordination of all training and preparations for the despatch of an expeditionary force as directed by the Army Council. Major-General Sir Clive Liddell is replacing Sir Edmund as Governor of Gibraltar.
