SHOOTER DROWNED
IN LAKE WAIRARAPA SWAM OUT AFTER BIRD {United Press Association) FEATHERSTON, 11th June. The first duck-shooting .fatality in the Wairarapa this season occurred yesterday afternoon, when a single man, Mr Percy Baron, aged 25, was drowned in Lake Wairarapa at a spot opposite Pigeon Bush. He was shooting with his brother-in-law, Mr Thomas Miller, and undressed and swam out into the lake to retrieve a bird that had been shot. He secured the bird, but was overcome while returning to the shore. Mr Miller, who could not swim, waded out as far as possible to give assisance, but could not reach the victim and experienced some difficulty in getting back himself. Dragging operations were undertaken yesterday and to-day by a party of 20 men under Constable A. McLeod. Featherston, and the body was recovered late this afternoon. Mr Baron was a son of Mr William Baron, farmer, Pigeon Bush, and worked with his father on the farm. An inquest will be held in Pigeon Bush tomorrow morning.
