RESCUE EFFECTED
PASSENGERS AND CREW OF WRECKED LINDENBANK [U.P.A.— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright! MANILA, 9th May. The United States destroyer Pope sent a wireless message to-day stating that she had rescued 66 passengers and members of the crew of the British steamer Lindenbank, on passage from Fremantle to Shanghai. The Lindenbank struck the Arena Reef in the middle of the Sulu Sea, and sank in 600 fathoms.
The Lindenbank was a cargo steamer of 5057 tons gross register, built at Belfast in 1930, and owned by /the Bank Line Limited (A. Weir and Co.), of London. The Lindenbank has made several voyages from Nauru Island to New Zealand with cargoes of phosphates. She left Nauru Island on 18th March with a cargo of phosphates for West Australian ports. She .arrived at Fremantle on 9th April, and after discharging there, loaded a full cargo of 7500 tons of wheat for Shanghai.
