Among (he 181 refugees of the Spanish war who arrived in London this week was Juan Antonio Mencndez, an artillery lieutenant, aged 15. Juan was taken from school at 13. and has been fighting for two years. He was wounded several times, but did not stop firing until 29th March.

Another refugee was Lieut.-Colonel Gustavo Duran, a composer and musician until he commanded the 25th Army Corps. He has been wounded on one of his hands.

He was one of the last to leave the Madrid trenches, and was captured on the road to Valencia He was taken before Franco’s military commander, expecting death.

They told him to go to a house and report next day. Valencia was in chaos, and he got away in the boat.

His wife and children have been in the Canary Isles since 1936 and he has not heard of them since.
