It is understood that Vice-Admiral Byrd and Mr Lincoln Ellsworth have been asked to consult the Government concerning plans for an official expedition to the South Polar regions in order “to fasten down American claims to the ' potential resources of the region, for which an international race is developing.” A prominent member of the Government explained “that sooner or later here must be a conference to settle he question of international claims in he region. Britain, Germany, France and Norway and virtually every other nation are claiming something. The State Department has never recognised the claims, and we want to fasten down our jurisdiction and obtain all possible data on the matter.”
