HOPE RANZAU

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The Hope Ranzau Women’s Institute held a successful meeting recently. In the unavoidable absence of the president, Miss Baigent, the vice-president, Mrs McDowell, presided over a good attendance of members. After singing the Ode and the Aspiration business was attended to, then came the social hour, the roll call limerick beginning: “There was an institute member,” caused some hearty laughs. Competition of plate of cakes or biscuits from wholemeal or brown sugar, was well entered into, the winner being Mrs A. Hill. The cut bloom competition was won by Mrs C. Thorn, and Mrs McDowell second.

The dramatic circle then gave a reading, “The Bishop’s Candlesticks.” This was greatly enjoyed by all. The hostesses, Mesdames Savage, R. Eden, and McDowell served the dainty supper, and the evening was closed with the singing of the National Anthem.. The Gardening Circle of the Hope Ranzau Institute spent a very pleasant afternoon at Mrs Thom’s pretty home, arranging the programmes for the next six months for the gardening circle, and after the afternoon tea had been dispensed with the members spent the remained of the time in the gardens, which looked very well, and many beautiful blooms were to be seen, in spite of the severe drying conditions. Each member had to make a nosegay from any of the flowers in the garden, and this was won by Mrs Hill, with Mrs Sutton second. Mrs Hill thanked Mrs Thorn on behalf of the members for the very pleasant afternoon spent at her home and in the gardens..
