PROPOSALS DISCUSSED FOR REDUCED IMPORTATION AND INCREASED ASSEMBLY OPERATIONS t Utippil HrenP A."«.»Hatlon> WELLINGTON. This Day. Negotiations are in progress between the Customs Minister and representatives of the motor industry that may have a fehly important bearing on the future of the industry in New Zealand. For some little time proposals have been discussed for a reduction in the importation of cars and an increase in local assembly operations. The proposal decrease is not known, but it is rumoured that the interests concerned have been arguing on the basis of a substantial reduction, possibly as much as 40 per cent.
Questioned Mr Nash said to-day that the Government was anxious to bring into operation, proposals that would ensure the maximum manufacture and assembly of motor cai's in the Dominion. We have been working along these lines, he said, but so far nothing had been completed.
