I ANNUAL MEETING OF WAIMEA SUB-BRANCH :SUPPORT FOR DEFENCE LEAGUE POLICY i | The annual meeting of the Waime* j sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers’ j Association was held at Richmond there being a fair attendance of member* from all parts of the Waimeas. The report and balance sheet for the year ended 31st March 1939, was adopted and satisfaction was expressed at the state of the finances. The number of members on the roll at the close ot the financial year wa* 66 and it is hoped that this number will increase considerably during the coming year. After some discussion regarding th® holding of some function at which the wives and families of members could attend a recommendation wes made to the incoming executive to consider the holding of a social during the winter, and also to endeavour to combine with the Nelson Association in the holding of their annual picnic. The election of officers resulted as follows: President. Mr Arthur Hunter; secj retary, Mr W. S. Gilbert; and the fol- ! lowing executive. Colonel Lorimer ; (Richmond!. Mr J. Disher (Richmond), Mr E. Taplin (Richmond). Mr W. Simp- ! son (Wakefield). Mr L. Hyde (Brightj water). Mr H F. Palmer (Waime* West*. Mr C. Robinson (Appleby), j Reference was made by the president |to the death of the Hon. W. W. Snod--1 grass who was a life member of the ! Association and who had given wonIdcrful service to his district and country, and help and advice to returned men. Other members supported the ; president's remarks, all present afterwards standing as a mark of respect. Following a discussion on world affairs and defence, the following resolution was carried unanimously: “That |this representative meeting of members of the Waimea Sub-branch of the R S.A.. in this hour of peril for the Brit- ! ish race, approves of all measures taken by the Now Zealand Government and the defence policy advocated by the New Zealand Defence League for the protection of British interests throughout the Empire, and New Zealand in particular.” After the conclusion of the business, rations were issued and a pleasant social hour spent.
