LONG TRESTLE BRIDGE

OVER WHIROKINO SWAMP 'United Presß Association! PALMERSTON N.. This Day. Built at a total cost of £83,000 including road approaches, a concrete trestle bridge over the Whirokino swamp, south of Foxton, was opened by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, the occasion being marked by an official gathering of local bodies and others. The trestle is the second largest concrete structure of its kind in the Dominion, being ninety spans, each of forty feet. The longest of this type is the Rakaia river bridge. Canterbury. The construction of the trestle provides an all weather route on this important Wellington-Auckland highway. On numerous occasions in the past floods have seriously interrupted traffic. Plans are under way for a new bridge over the river at the southern end of the trestle, replacing the old humpback bridge.
