Oil the recommendation of the general committee the annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party to-day reaffirmed the principle of the abolition of corporal and capital punishment, including corporal punishment in schools. The folio wing remit wa s adopted : “That the present legislation in respect to prosecutions by police officers he amended to (a) allow dependants who are acquitted to be released from the total cost oT defending the action, and (b) that* Crown defendants be appointed to act in all cases where the Crown Prosecutor is engaged.” File Government was congratulated upon the progress made in housing the people, and it was decided to suggest that, meanwhile, consideration he given to tlie advisability of extending the scope and purpose of the Fair Rent Act. The committee stated that it was informed that the Government was strengthening its organisation for the building of more houses each year, and that the question of rents generally was at present under review by the Government. It was decided to send a cable message congratulating the British Labour Party on the stand taken against aggressor nations.
