Research work for the historical maps j to be included in the Centennial Atlas j and Gazetteer, perhaps the most ambitious project of the National Centennial J Historical Committee, is being pushed j ahead. No effort is being spared to j make the atlas as complete and authoritative as possible, and it is expected : that it will be ready for the printer by J Ist November. The atlas will be an j invauable supplement to the historical j M"\eys to be issued. The maps will be ; supported by several pages of letter- j press written by experts. The original | Maori migration and early explorations in the Pacific will be a subject for a map each. There will be two 1800 Maori maps, the first a coloured contour map. including the tribal areas, and, if pos- 1 sible, boundaries, "canoe areas,” certain ■ show the Maori tracks and waterways, ' pas and place-names. The second will ' show the Maori tracks and waterways, « pas and kaings and place-names. The i 1800-1840 Maori map will show the scope of the tribal wars in the nineteenth century and the alteration in ! certain tribal areas. Pas of significance ! to that period and the engagements will ] be indicated. Other maps will ilustrate the disposition of mission stations, land acquisitions from the Maoris, the growth and extension of population at feur different periods in New Zealand’s first 100 years, the goldfields, Antarctic exploration, and the development of - road, rail, stemship and air transport I as at four different periods during the i century. i
