NELSON’S WATER SUPPLY
ABOUT MILLION GALLONS PER DAY BEING USED PRESENT POSITION EXPLAINED BI MAYOR BIG DAM HAS BEEN SHUT OFF FOR OVER A WEEK With a view to correcting an erroneous impression given to the Nelson public and to people in all parts of the Dominion by a number of photographs recently published in various papers, the Mayor (Mr G. L. Page) at last night’s meeting of the City Council, made an explanation of the present position in regard to the water supply of the city.
Mr Page said one of the most damaging photographs so far as the city was concerned was the one referring to Tahunanui, which was not connected with the water reticulation.
The Mayor stated that all supply from the main dam was shut off over a week ago. The upper weir was at present supplying the high levels, Brook street down lo Brook street store, and other areas. The low levels
were receiving their supply from the pumps at Hanby Park and Normanby bridge, the water from the latter being chlorinated. The city was at present using close on one million galons per day, and he wished to thank the public for the manner in which his appeal for the careful use of water had been responded to. The total prohibition of hosing had helped considerably. In the town were a number of industries which had to be kept going. One industry was using up to 60,000 gallons per day. but that was being metered and paid for.
About one million gallons of water per day was available, without the use of the big dam, and he was surprised that photographs which gave such a false impression of the position had been sent away.
